Dipping My Toe In The World of Vlogging

For some time I’ve really admired people who Vlog. It’s such a great way to interact with followers and convey, in an easy relaxed way, a message which could get lost in the written word of blogging.

It’s also terrifying!

I’ve always been used to Public Speaking throughout my working life. Somehow that was different. I was completely comfortable speaking to large or small groups. I often spoke about Leadership and, while I would always share personal stories within my business presentation, I guess I was able to hide behind my role. I wasn’t just Sam, I was the Executive Manager of the Banking Contact Centre.

Now, I’m just Sam…..chronic illness sufferer. The girl with the rare disease. Everything I share is deeply personal and it makes me feel more vulnerable.

So why do it? Firstly, I always like to challenge myself and push my comfort zone boundaries. Just because I’m medically retired doesn’t mean I can’t still focus on personal development.

Secondly and most importantly, I genuinely want to find ways to connect on a personal level with others struggling with chronic disease. I want to share my support forum with as many people as possible. I want others to experience the amazing support and understanding members provide each other in Medical Musings with Friends.

I will always write articles and blog, as it’s such a passion for me, but I do want to expand the “My Medical Musings” world. I want to reach more people battling chronic illness who may like a variety of ways to interact.

I have shared this vlog on my closed Facebook support forum, Medical Musings with Friends . It’s my second vlog to the members of my forum, but I hope the message is relevant for all my blog readers and the wider chronic illness community.

In this vlog, I am focusing on our carers who are also our loved ones. In particular I’m chatting about how important it is for us, as the care recipient, to show care in return.

I also wrote a blog post on this topic earlier this year called, Caring For The Carer. It provides more tips than I chat about in the vlog if you’d like to read it.

So here goes….my first vlog!!!

  1. I think this is a brilliant thing to do, Sam! I totally agree with that vulnerability, and how it’s very different with work (when it’s a job, a role, a title you ‘hide’ behind). Thank you for sharing it here – you look lovely and you have a great voice, so you’re perfect for vlogging!

It’s good you had a good birthday with lots of messages, and I’m glad you count all of us in your friends because we love you 😉

Absolutely yes with the government pushing people to buy and stimulate the economy. Sounds like some good buys with 50% off. I can’t find much in the way of good discounts in the UK on anything I want or need. Plenty of sales on all the stuff I definitely don’t need (and therefore should put down my debit card!)

I thought a while ago about starting a YouTube channel. Then I realised I didn’t have the face for it. So I thought about a Podcast, then I realised I have a weak voice that sounds like I’m 12 years old. So I stuck to writing 😂

As for your question with what we want to see from vlogs, I personally would be happy to watch/listen to any content you want to share. Covering news topics, advice, personal opinions on different topics, are all things I think I’d be particularly keen on. Your readers/viewers will enjoy whatever you share, Sam, as you have such a wonderfully gentle way of doing it that makes it so easy to listen. Very well done with this!!

  3. Well done for trying this because I know it can’t be easy. Even if you were previously used to public speaking, this is a whole new ballgame for you. I recorded a video of myself last year for TN awareness. It only lasted for about one and a half minutes but it took me about fifty takes before I was anywhere near happy! Don’t think I could cope with that. You have the confidence and the ability and you’re genuine and that’s what other chronic illness people need to hear. Your blogs are always helpful, so your vlogs will be too.

I have a problem with vlogs in that I have a very bad broadband connection. Due to where I live, we need satellite broadband which is very expensive, but not very good. We also have a limit on it, so quite restrictive for watching videos.

    1. Thanks so much Elizabeth. It’s definitely time consuming and exhausting when battling pain. Writing will remain my first love. My Vlogs will likely be few and far between I think 💞
