It’s Christmas Eve……Chronic Illness Style

“You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I’m telling you why…
Santa Claus is coming to Town!!”

It’s Christmas Eve!!

I think it’s always been my most favourite day of the Christmas period ever since I was a young girl. The excitement and anticipation of Christmas Day just around the corner, still ignites once Christmas Eve arrives.

Christmas Day will be simple, a roast turkey roll for lunch from leftovers from our main meal on Christmas Eve. My husband and I will basically nibble on Christmas treats all day!!

We’ll open some presents, chat to family on the phone or via text and relax with watching Christmas Concerts or maybe a movie…so special, no fuss and I love it.

Christmas Eve Past

In years past, when health was strong and my husband was working as a full time Anglican Priest, we were both involved in Christmas church services.

Usually at least three on Christmas Eve (including a midnight one and often travel between church centres) and two on Christmas morning. I was looking after the children’s nativity plays and singing solos at these services.

We were then shattered but exhilarated. The rest of Christmas was enjoyed through a blur of extreme tiredness. Happy memories 😊

Christmas Eve Present

Our Christmas Eve tradition now is to have an easy “festive,” roast dinner sitting at our dining table, beautifully set with my favourite china and other pretty adornments.

We’ll eat early so we can clean up from dinner and then I can get showered and into my comfy night clothes. We’ll then watch Carols by Candlelight on TV live streamed from Melbourne. It is a yearly tradition in many Australian homes and one we love.

This has been a huge year due to COVID, however my biggest challenge has been my ever constant companion…. pain!

Spinal Surgeries and procedures have done little to slow the progression of my bone disease

On a brighter note, my writing has taken off in new directions, my forum continues to grow in size but also in heart, as members and my moderator team encompass each other with such genuine love and support. Plus I started a Podcast!!

So as Christmas Eve 2020 arrives and as I reminisce a little, I’m feeling incredibly tired.

Christmas is a great time for life to slow down until after New Year at least, and I’m looking forward to having some quiet time to just relax and unwind.

Whatever your Christmas Eve traditions and your physical abilities, I hope it is a day full of love and special moments and perhaps some Christmas surprises.

A Holy Night

Christmas Eve 2018 marked the 200 year anniversary of one of the most beautiful Christmas carols and one which really encompasses all I love about this holy night.

December 24, 1818 — in a little church in Austria, a poem set to music was heard for the first time. It would become one of the most popular and beloved Christmas carols of all time.

The lyrics were written by a young Catholic priest, Fr Joseph Mohr, and the music was composed by Francis Xavier Gruber, an organist and school master.

“Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace”

Sending you all lots of love at this very special time of the year and wishing you peace, rest and joy…..and perhaps a little Christmas miracle which would be special to you!

Happy Christmas !!
