What A Year… Time to Review 2024!

A Year in Review

What a year it’s been!

So much has happened this year, so for my 2024 year in review, I’m going to try and simply list the highlights and lowlights :

  • Christmas Eve/Day 2023 – we had no power for 24 hours! All our food perished, and we ended up getting sausage rolls and connoisseur ice cream from the local eleven. Was so weird it was wonderful.
  • April 2024 – Despite being fully vaccinated, we both contracted Covid. Peter was hospitalised, and I had it for 2 months!
  • April 2024 – Peter was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. Our lives were about to change so much.
  • April 2024 – we had a beautiful visit from Peter’s daughter/my stepdaughter and son in law
  • June 2024 – another blessing… a lovely surprise visit from our eldest granddaughter and her financé.
  • September 2024 – Peter’s diagnosis confirmed as an acquired brain injury with underlying progressive Alzhiemers Disease.
  • October 2024-
    • It was clear I needed help, so we increased my  carers from 2 days a week to 7 days a week. It was a huge adjustment, but I am so grateful for the amazing support.
    • Another major life change occurred. Peter could no longer drive, and we are now even more reliant on carers for transport. No longer can we have the convenience of simply hopping in our car for a country drive or a trip to the chemist to pick up a script. Such a loss we are both struggling with.
  • November 2024- another lovely visit from my stepdaughter and husband is just around the corner. They are helping us sell our car and sort out future life/care plans.

The rest of the year has been full of setting up  carers for me as my disease has progressed to my lumbar spine, completely compressing my nerves, and I can only stand for 2 minutes.

My lymphatic system is also breaking down, causing me to leak lymphatic fluid from my legs.

I have amazing carers and registered nurses looking after me at home, while I also try to provide support and care for Peter.

So the future is a little unknown, but we are just trying to take life one day at a time.

We are planning a festive Christmas for two, celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary and 30 years since we were engaged to be married…while also hoping the power stays on this year!

Lots of love and a happy and blessed Christmas,

Sam and Peter xx
